Team strategist, Mitch Anderson, with secret weapon, Phil Bystrom in tow, orchestrated a brilliant victory over our North County rivals at their home course Pala Mesa! In the early morning pre-match strategy meeting, it was decided that the first team, lead by the ever-threatening Don Dudley and equally imposing, Jerry Smith, would soundly thrash the first team at PM, dashing the spirits of all our playing competitors, while increasing the level of anxiety in those final two teams, knowing they would have to play their best to beat the boys in blue. We then decided, to make the victory that much more staggering, we should have the 2nd team throw that match and let PM win. I know, I know, what if the 3rd team was not up to the challenge? Never fear, while it was difficult for Brian Smith and Jerry Moskovitz to disguise their treachery, and even more difficult to make it seem that they were actually playing poorly. They pulled off the ruse perfectly, giving the boys from PM six points they certainly did not deserve. So now, it was up to the ever dashing duo of Anderson/Bystrom to strike the fatal blow. I will say it was difficult to hold Phil the thrill Bystrom back, but we only beat the PM boys by 4 strokes on the front nine, enjoying the squirming of the fellows in the other cart! On the back nine, the game was afoot, and the boys in blue were prepared to take 4 more points from the PM pair. Suddenly though, Phil, up for the kill, Bystrom had a moment of weakness! He said, Mitch, we have them right were we want them, but they are nice guys, let’s let them get 2 points for their team! What, I said, just having hit my approach shot to within 12 feet on the difficult par four 17th. Look, he says, I’m going to flair my next shot over to the left and see if I can bogey the hole. Then, with a look I’ve never seen from the weathered killer, Phil said, you’ll need to three putt and take a bogey as well! Just then, a small tear emerged from the left eye of this golf match artisan. It was difficult to do, but I managed to actually make my three putt look authentic, giving rise to a small smile from our competitors, and a knowing grin from my partner. We went on to half the last hole, giving the PM boys a two stroke victory on the back. What a game? Pala Mesa – 8, Twin Oaks – 10!
